All-State Teachers Workshop

Join us Aug 10-12, 2017 at the College of St. Benedict.

On-campus housing reservations were due July 30.
However, there are hotels near the College of St. Benedict
(most of them are close to St. Cloud & Waite Park, MN).

All Sessions are located at Benedicta Arts Center Recital Hall, unless otherwise noted.

Session presenters are set, but schedule may change slightly (will have final schedule by May 20 at the latest).

Thursday Aug 10

7:30 AM Registration

8:00-9:00 * New Music Reading Session #1, J.W. Pepper Editor's Choice

9:15-10:30 * How to Use Alexander Technique to improve skill at playing a stringed instrument without additional practice time.  Brian McCullough, Director, Minnesota Center for the Alexander Technique — MinnCAT at the University of Minnesota.

10:45-noon * New Music Reading Session #2, J.W. Pepper Editor's Choice

Noon-1:00 Lunch (on your own)

1:00-2:30 Use Noteflight to teach composing & music theory orchestra with Dan Mollick, Edina Public Schools (Please bring own device - laptop preferred, but iPad will work, too)

2:45-4:00 Observe an All-State Orchestra Rehearsal

4:15-5:30 Violin Masterclass with Mary Sorlie (joint with MMEA??)

5:30-6:45 Dinner (on your own)

7:00:8:30 * New Music Reading Session #3

9:00 MNSOTA President's Reception, location TBD (last year at the lounge in dorm) [Optional] Informal discussion, idea sharing.

Friday, August 11

9:15-10:15 Help, my students don’t take private lessons!

10:30-11:30 How to teach students to practice with focus on what strategies current brain research tells are the most effective

11:30-12:45 Lunch (on your own)

12:45-1:45 Basics for the non-string teacher

2:00-3:00 How to recruit and retain new String Teachers

3:15-4:15 * Using Rolland Techniques to remove tension from playing

4:30-5:15 Meet the 2017 Minnesota All-State Orchestra Conductor - Miriam Burns

5:45-7:45 Shop Talk Dinner, participants and Dr. Marg Schmidt  (Optional - Pre-registration by August 5 and $15 per person)

NEW 8:30 Chamber Music JAM Session – Bring your own music and be prepared to read what others have brought (OPTIONAL - informal drop in.  Will split up into groups there!)

              Saturday, August 12

8:00-9:30 * Baroque demonstration and hands on workshop with members of Lyra Baroque – Mary Sorlie, violin, and Laura Handler, cello.

9:45-11:30 Advocating for music education in our communities.  Details about current campaigns, including NafME's Advocacy, the Broader Minded Campaign, and Music Makes Us Whole Initiative with David Stordalen, MMEA Advocacy Chair & Band Director at New Ulm High School

11:45-12:30 PM Master Music Mentor Session

12:00-1:00 PM Lunch available in Gorecki Hall (participants may also eat a nearby coffee shops and restaurants)

1:30 All State Orchestra Concert, Escher Auditorium

2:30 Closing reception

1 or 2 graduate credits are available through Hamline University at the cost of $173 per credit.  Additional information will be available at Registration Table.
