The Middle Level Honors Orchestra is for students in grades 7-9. The best string players from the state will join together for a rehearsal on February 17 at the University of Northwestern-St. Paul in Roseville and a performance on February 18, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. at the Minneapolis Convention Center as part of the MMEA Midwinter Clinic.
We are delighted to have Minnesota native Tanner Otto joining us as this year’s guest conductor. Tanner holds a degree in Music Education from The Ohio State University and currently teaches orchestra at Sycamore Community Schools (Cincinnati). Since arriving in Sycamore, the orchestra program has increased by 55% in the last four years. A violist and violinist, he started improvising and playing eclectic styles early in his music career. A strong advocate of technology and improvisation, Tanner has developed lesson plans that use GarageBand, BandLab, Noteflight to help students practice, compose songs, and build their improvising skills. He has presented these ideas at conferences across Ohio, including at the Ohio Music Education Association Conference and the Ohio State String Teacher Workshop. Nationally, he has presented at the ASTA National Conference and the Midwest Clinic. In 2022 Tanner was named to Yamaha Music’s list of “40 under 40” Music Educators and the Ohio String Teachers Association’s Young Teacher of the Year.
Tanner is a 2015 graduate of Moorhead High School in Minnesota and was a member of the MNSOTA Middle Level Honors orchestra in 2009, 2010, and 2011. Tanner began arranging pop tunes for string orchestra twelve years ago. Since then, he has continued arranging and composing for various ensembles from string quartet to full orchestra. Tanner is excited to be published with Alfred Music Publishing.
