Upper Midwest String Camp

The Upper Midwest String and Chamber Music Conference was founded at Mankato State University in 1979 as a one-week summer teacher conference and a student component was added soon after. By the mid 1990s under the direction of Harry Dunscombe, there were 2 levels of orchestra plus chamber music for students in grades 7–12. The teacher training component evolved from a teacher conference to an intern/mentor program for college students under the direction of Mary Horozaniecki and Sarah Hersh. By 2000, Upper Midwest had in place the curriculum that it sustained for decades. In 2007, Upper Midwest moved to the College of St. Benedict under the direction of David Arnott. Through the 2010s a fiddling component was added for all students. The last Upper Midwest Camp occurred in 2022. Information about the curriculum and more history is available in the PDF.
